Amidst reports that a large number of medium and small garment manufacturing units in Bangladesh are facing gradual closure owing to diverse reasons, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has sought Government intervention to bail them out.

“Big factories are going greener and increasing their space and capacity. On the other hand, small and medium factories are being closed one after another,” reportedly underlined BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq, adding, “The consumer pattern is changing and we need to help survive the small ones for ourselves as the business pattern is changing with the changing trend of customers’ buying pattern.”

The BGMEA President said this while speaking at an award ceremony organised jointly by the United States Green Building Certification (USGBC) and Green Building Certification Inc. (GBCI) in capital Dhaka recently.

She called upon the Government to provide funds to upgrade technology of those units while urging the USGBC to set criteria to bring on-board the small and medium garment units in the environment-friendly process.
