Bangladesh’s premier sea port, Chittagong Port, which handles bulk of import and export including apparel shipments — apparel industry is the principal foreign currency earner for the country — has once again joined the ‘three-million’ this year even if it first achieved this feat in 2019 for handling 3,088,197-TEU containers from 1 January to 31 December that year.
Media reports maintained this adding the port handled 3,169,367-TEU containers from 1 January to 26 December, 2021, and achieved the feat of handling more than 3 million TEU, well before the end of the current calendar year.
Chittagong Port handled 2,839,987 TEU containers in 2020 even if the figure stood at 2,903,996 in 2018 and 2,667,223 in 2017.
It may be mentioned here according to the latest list of Lloyd’s, which is the oldest journal on port and shipping, Chittagong Port is now the 67th busiest amongst 100 top container ports in the world.
