Bangladesh is all set to review the minimum monthly wage of the country’s garment works even as the Department of Labour (DoL) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment has sought names of representatives from the employers’ trade-bodies namely the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) to represent in the wage board aimed at re-fixing the monthly minimum wages.
Reports claimed this citing the concerned officials and went on to add the DOL on 25 and 26 January, wrote separate letters in this regard to the BGMEA and the BKMEA even if the Government last reviewed the wages of the garment workers in 2018, and fixed the entry-level minimum wages at Taka 8,000 from what was earlier Taka 5,300.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, BGMEA Vice-President Shahidullah Azim BKMEA Vice-President Fazlee Shamim Ehsan reportedly maintained they would send names of their respective representatives within a couple of days while Bangladesh National Garment Workers Employees League President Sirajul Islam Rony on his part reportedly opined ‘it is the demand of time to review the wages.’
