Bangladesh’s apex garment makers’ body BGMEA has sought the intervention of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to ensure due diligence in trade in collaboration with its signatory members and global forums even as it sought WTO’s support in capacity building in trade negotiation.
Media reports maintained this adding a visiting delegation of the garment makers body headed by BGMEA President Faruque Hassan recently made the requests as it called on WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in Geneva.
A statement issued in this direction further added the BGMEA President also urged WTO to extend technical assistance to undertake feasibility researches on FTAs, RTAs saying they also have to work on their internal capacity building as far as trade negotiation and economic diplomacy is concerned even as he, reportedly, also maintained, “…a number of global brands have gone bankrupt leaving their suppliers to uncertainties over payments. Also, Covid exposed weaknesses in commercial terms and compliance in cross border transactions,” while requesting the WTO for its intervention in this regard.
