Alrkayan Apparel and Exports, a Mumbai based jeans manufacturer, has doubled his capacity and is getting into new markets for exports. The company, presently producing 4,000 pcs/day, has invested Rs. 32 crore more to double this capacity by starting a new unit in an area of 7,500 sq.m. in Ambarnath near Ulhasnagar (Maharasthra). The washing unit here is almost ready to commence operations while the new sewing plant with a capacity to manufacturing 4,000 pcs/day will be operational by January next year, hence doubling its jeans manufacturing.
Prabhakar Shetty, MD of the company told Apparel Online, “We selected Ambarnath to setup our new unit because this place is under the MIDC (Maharasthra Industrial Development Corporation) and washing/dyeing is allowed here. Fifty per cent of the labour here is migratory and we are providing them rooms to stay and also training facilities.” The 20 years old Alrkayan has its own domestic brand and is also doing job work for Pepe Jeans, Spyker, Raymond and Westside. The company is known for its washing ability and Shetty claims that their company is the only one in Mumbai using Municipal water for washing, not the underground water, as it does not give good result in washing.
With expanded capacities, the company is now planning to export jeans to Egypt and Russia. With a total production capacity of 8,000 pieces per day after expansion, the strategy is to dedicate 50 per cent of its production to exports. Shetty is very hopeful to get orders from Russia in the next season and is looking at a growth of 150 per cent. Currently the company has a turnover of Rs. 36 crore.
