Garment workers, who had lost their jobs in the wake of the breakout of the coronavirus pandemic, are now, reportedly, getting hired again but at lower pay.
This was underlined by media reports, which cited labour leaders and garment workers in this regard.
Speaking to the media, Secretary of Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation, Nahidul Islam Noyon, reportedly, maintained that factory owners are taking advantage of enough supply of the workers by offering lower wages, while President of the Bangladesh National Garments Workers Employees League, Sirajul Islam Rony, on his part, reportedly, stated this was unfair to the workers.
Meanwhile, the apex garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) as well as the factory owners have, reportedly, denied the allegations.
We need to see if there are any instances of factories violating laws…, reportedly, maintained the BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq, adding, ‘first of all, we do not have any idea about the credibility of such allegations and the magnitude of such incidents.’
She further added factories are to operate within the legal perimeter and should not violate laws, rules and regulations of the country under any circumstances.
