Walmart Inc’s subsidiary Walmart India has pledged to eliminate one-time-use shrink wrap which is used for storing apparel products. It will replace it with a sustainable storage solution among all of its Best Price Modern Wholesale Stores in the country in phases.
The leading retail chain has already kicked off the drive in its Best Price outlets in Maharashtra, where recently, the State Government imposed a ban on the usage of plastic, in a bid to save the environment. The US-based retailer will expand this initiative in other parts of India in a similar manner in the coming time.
Krish Iyer, President & CEO, Walmart India spoke on this development and reportedly said that the company understands how huge this (plastic pollution) issue was and that it will take a combined effort from citizens, industry and the Government to cut the plastic waste. “With this project, our attempt is to completely eliminate single-use plastic shrink wrap throughout our company’s stores across the nation by the first three months of next year,” he added.
Notably, Walmart India claims to be using sustainable operations by generating more output from solar energy, water harvesting and recycling and energy efficient solutions for the betterment of the atmosphere.
Furthermore, it has installed solar rooftop panels on 17 of their Best Price stores in the country which are catering to 33 per cent of the total energy demand in all of its outlets. Walmart expects to take these numbers to 40-50 per cent by the next couple of years and has set a goal to achieve 100 per cent renewable energy in the coming few years.
