In Barnala (Punjab), farmers have raised their voices against the Trident Group for contaminating and depleting groundwater,which has negatively impacted the farmers.
As per reports, the company has temporarily shut down major operations in this unit as a precautionary measure in view of the five-day protest call given by farmers’ body under the ‘save water’ campaign.
This unit has around 10,000 employees including around 4,000 women.
The communique to Mumbai Stock Exchange read, “As a precautionary measure and to avoid any confrontation/untoward incidents and to ensure the safety and security of our workforce as well as protection of our assets, the management of the company has decided to temporarily close/lockdown/suspend its operations from intervening night of July 20/21.”
Trident Group is amongst the Indian textile giants having a strong market reach in yarns and home furnishing products.
Farmers’ unions, including Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan), have staged days-long stir in Dhaula village of Barnala. A large number of women also participated in the demonstration.
As per media reports, the factory is discharging the water underground, which is impacting the crops,in additionto affecting villagers’ health.
