River Island, a British fashion retailer, stated that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global organisation that assists companies in reducing emissions in accordance with the most recent climate science, has accepted its science-based targets.
In order to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, River Island said in a statement that it is dedicated to long- and near-term emissions reduction targets with the SBTi.
The science-backed targets of River Island include cutting absolute scope 1 and scope 2 (direct) greenhouse gas emissions by 90 per cent by 2030, starting from a 2019 base year; achieving net zero on direct emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2030 by fully neutralising residual emissions; and cutting absolute Scope 3 (indirect) greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent by 2032, starting from a 2021 base year.
Furthermore, it has pledged to source 100 per cent renewable electricity yearly by 2030 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by the end of 2040 by reducing absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90 per cent from a base year of 2021.
José Arguedas, head of sustainability at River Island, said: “We are incredibly proud to announce that our net-zero targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.”
