The Responsible Business Hub (RBH), established by BGMEA with GIZ’s support, has commenced operations to enhance human rights and environmental due diligence in Bangladesh’s readymade garments (RMG) industry.
Serving as an information center, the RBH will raise awareness and offer guidance to manufacturing companies regarding Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) standards and requirements.
Shahidullah Azim, Vice President of BGMEA; Jan Janowski, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Germany in Dhaka; Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, Vice President of BKMEA; and Abdullah Hil Rakib, Director, BGMEA, attended the inauguration ceremony held in Dhaka on Sunday.
Reinhard Junker, Deputy Head of Division Sustainable Supply Chains, BMZ, delivered the keynote speech. BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim emphasised the industry’s sustainability vision for 2030, focusing on innovation, digitisation, diversification, and prioritising ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance).
He expressed confidence that the Responsible Business Hub of BGMEA would serve as an information center, providing factories with up-to-date knowledge and guidance on human rights and environmental due diligence obligations.
He emphasised the need for a unified principle-based legislation to address the emerging due diligence issue, considering the constant passing of laws and regulations.
The Responsible Business Hub will aid garment factories in enhancing their capabilities to comply with new regulations and reporting obligations, focusing on due diligence and sustainability.
Furthermore, it will assist companies in integrating environmental and human rights due diligence into their operations, aiming to prevent and address adverse impacts on people and the environment.
