After Myanmar and Cambodia, now demand for more wages has become a burning issue in Kenya too. Demanding more wages, more than 1,900 workers of King’orani Export Processing Zone factory was on strike at Mikindani, Mombasa.
The workers’ representative Duncan Mulee said that workers were paid minimal wages of up to Sh 6,000 a month. Workers can’t survive with such little amount every month with the high cost of living in the country. He claimed that the factory management had denied workers the right to join trade unions which can champion for their rights. The issue came up barely two days after Changamwe Ward Representative Jimmy Odari warned investors in the export processing zone at Changamwe to stop exploiting their workers.
