As per a Reuters report, major global apparel retailers have recently agreed on a two-year agreement with Bangladesh factory owners and garment workers that would extend the already existing agreement in this regard as per which retailers are liable to legal action unless their factories meet the labour safety standards.
Named the International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry, the new agreement, reportedly, comes into effect from 1 September even as the original agreement (known as the Bangladesh Accord) was due to expire on 31 August.
The report citing a source further added that a list of those who have signed the new agreement will be made available on 1 September even as it added that in 2013, many amongst the 200 retailers signed up to the accord amongst which were names like Fast Retailing’s Uniqlo, H&M, Hugo Boss, adidas and Inditex.
A statement issued in this direction, reportedly, underlined that the ‘renewed agreement advances the fundamental elements that made the accord successful’, while also, reportedly, adding that this is a legally binding agreement between trade unions and companies to make the apparel and textile factories safe.
