The issue of garment workers’ wages continues to haunt the industry after reports of workers’ agitation in the Gazipur area emerged again this Sunday.
As per media reports, around 500 workers employed with the KAC Fashionwear Limited on Sunday afternoon took to the streets demanding wages for May.
The workers’ demonstration, which continued for almost an hour, reportedly disrupted traffic on the busy Dhaka-Tangail highway after the agitated workers laid siege at Chokrobortir Tek in Kashimpur.
The manufacturing unit has around 6,000 workers, most of whom have been reportedly asked not to come to work as there were not sufficient work orders. However, the management has reportedly promised to pay them their wages.
The workers alleged, despite the assurance, authorities were only paying around 500 workers who were currently working in the unit.
This agitated the workers, who demanded immediate release of May month’s wage.
As per police Sub Inspector of Kashimpur Police Station, the factory authorities have reportedly informed the police that they were unable to pay all the workers due to shortage of fund but assured to clear the workers’ wages in the coming weeks.
