The IndustriALL Global Union has called for an end to police interference in the activities of the trade unions in Bangladesh.
As per a press release issued in this direction, General Secretary of the IndustriALL Global UnionAtle Høie — IndustriALL Global Union represents more than 50 million workers in the energy, mining and manufacturing industries, including apparel manufacturing sector, in over 140 countries, including Bangladesh— in a letter written to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, demanded this even as the letter, reportedly, maintained, “…We wish to bring to your attention the issue of police obstruction in the formation of Chittagong Regional Committee of the IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC), which is the coordinating body of the affiliates of IndustriALL Global Union in Bangladesh,” adding that the police in Chittagong did not allow the meeting to take place even as it added that on 24 September, when the meeting was to take place, IBC’s Senior Vice President Salauddin Shapon, reportedly, received a telephone call from the Double Mooring police station that the meeting could not take place.
As per reports, consequent to Chittagong having a substantial number of garment factories and the workers working in some of these factories being members of unions affiliated to federations, which make up the IBC, the IndustriALL Bangladesh Council decided to form a regional committee.
Keeping with the same many leaders had, reportedly, travelled to the port city (Chittagong) to form this regional committee with representatives of the federations there.
