In a proactive response to the devastating impact of Cyclone Mocha, the H&M Foundation, the philanthropic arm of H&M Group, has pledged a significant donation of US $ 250,000 to the Red Cross/Red Crescent. The funds will be utilised to assist their commendable efforts in providing aid and relief to the affected regions.
Cyclone Mocha, reported as the most powerful cyclone witnessed in the past decade, wreaked havoc along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border on 14th May. The cyclone left a trail of destruction, severely damaging crucial infrastructure, agriculture, and people’s livelihoods in both countries.
While the exact consequences on the garment sector remain uncertain, the United Nations has urgently appealed for assistance to support the 1.6 million vulnerable individuals impacted by this catastrophic event.
Recognising the significant role Bangladesh plays in its manufacturing operations, H&M expressed its commitment to prioritising the allocation of funds towards a comprehensive approach. This includes ensuring access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene—critical necessities during such crises. Moreover, the company emphasised the importance of incorporating disaster risk reduction and preparedness measures ahead of the upcoming monsoon season in the affected regions.
In a release, Karl-Johan Persson, H&M Foundation board member, said, “What is happening in Myanmar and Bangladesh is heart-breaking and our thoughts are with the people affected by this terrible cyclone.
“Humanitarian organisations and local communities are working hard to help those affected and we hope that our donation will support the essential aid relief efforts.”
