Coach, one of the luxury brands under the umbrella of fashion conglomerate, Tapestry, announced its pledge to ban fur and phase it out completely before the debut of its Fall 2019 collection.

Joshua Schulman, President and CEO of the luxury giant, said in a press release on Tuesday, “Coach has been committed to advancing sustainable practices for many years, with the introduction of our corporate responsibility goals in 2015. Back then, we laid the groundwork for prioritizing social and environmental initiatives. The decision to go fur-free is a truly meaningful milestone for the brand.”

The ban will be applied on all types of animal fur, comprising of coyote, mink, fox, and rabbit, as a part of this new regulation. The ban is yet to include other animal products such as shearling, mohair, and angora and is being urged by PETA to do so immediately.

The fur ban is spreading like wildfire in the industry as key players such as Diane Von Furstenberg and Burberry announced the ban of fur in the past to join the ranks of Gucci, Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo, Versace, Furla, BCBG, Gap Inc, Inditex, H&M, and ASOS. In fact, the London Fashion Week was the first of the major fashion weeks to go entirely fur free on the runway front while online retailers such as Net-a-Porter outright refused to stock fur products. Los Angeles became the largest U.S. city to ban fur sales recently.

The Executive Director of animal charity Humane Society International UK, Claire Bass, expressed her support for the fur-ban decision of Coach, “HSI is delighted that another fashion heavyweight, Coach, has decided to drop fur from its collections and it’s 100 per cent the right thing to do. The last 18 months have seen an unprecedented number of fashion’s biggest brands going fur-free, and there is no question that they are on the right side of history.”

Tapestry, boasting of a US $ 5.9 billion rise in revenue for 2018, also includes major brands such as Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman.
