Garment workers went on a protest in Bangladesh’s Gazipur area recently after a road accident injured one of their colleagues.
According to media reports, an electrician employed with a garment unit in the area was hit by a bus in the afternoon of 22 March, following which, garment workers took to the street.
Enraged at the incident, they allegedly laid siege to the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, disrupting vehicular movement for two hours besides vandalising some vehicles while also allegedly setting a bus on fire.
However, following the police intervention, normalcy returned and vehicular movement also started, reportedly, claimed the Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Abdullah Al Mamun even as the garment workers alleged at least three garment workers lost their lives in accidents in this area in the last one year.
