In Karnataka, a former professional of one of the leading apparel exporters has allegedly committed suicide alleging harassment from two mid-level officials of the company. Police are investigating the matter.
The names of the AGM, Quality and the AGM, HR have been included for mistreating the deceased.
Kiran B., a 28-year-old who used to work as a quality in-charge at Shahi Exports and a resident of Berembady in Gundlupet taluk committed suicide as he was allegedly forced to leave the job with his former seniors creating continuous trouble for his career.
Rukmini V.P., (President) Garment Labour Union (GLU), a women-led trade union engaged in organising garment workers and protecting their rights told Apparel Resources, “Kiran B. left his job in July 2023 and has been trying to find a job in different factories but AGM- HR Anil and AGM- Quality Lokesh have given bad feedback about Kiran to the units that were ready to hire him.”
She further added that in his death note, Kiran B. mentioned that he was allegedly removed from his job without any reason. He had requested that this not be done since he had commitments and a life to lead.
The union has urged the company to take action against the alleged perpetrators and provide relief and justice to the deceased worker’s family.
“We are deeply saddened about the unfortunate demise of our former employee, Kiran B. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family during this difficult time. Given that the matter is under police investigation and to allow the law to take its course, we would refrain from making any comments on the merits of this case at this point,” Shahi Exports replied in response to Apparel Resources’ email on this issue.
