US-based start-up Evrnu recycles old clothing and creates completely new yarn for new clothing to prevent pollution.
The company uses solvent to turn cotton and other fabrics into pulp which it then extrudes through a fine filter. One of the company’s first partners was apparel brand Levi’s. It may be noted that Americans throw out 13.1 million tonnes of textiles each year, of which 11 million tonnes ends up in landfills.
During her visit to China, Stacy Flynn, Co-Founder, Evrnu was dazed by the level of fabric-related pollution. “The air quality was so thick we couldn’t see each other standing next to each other,” said Flynn. She then became convinced of the need for “a way of breaking down waste and getting it back into the front-end of the system”. This gave birth to a revolutionary brand.

The cloth Evrnu has made so far has the texture of silk and is stronger than cotton. It costs the same as organic cotton, so will probably use in premium products to begin with, claims Flynn. Evrnu is planning a factory and hopes to be in production by the end of next year.
