In Cambodia, the official minimum wage for workers in textile-related sectors, including garment and footwear sector, will be now US $ 200 per month.
Notably, it is hiked by US $ 6.
The new wage will be applicable from 2023. It was initially pegged at US $ 198, but Prime Minister Hun Sen stepped in to add US $ 2 to the total, making it US $200 per month.
www.phnompenhpost.com has reported that the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training made the announcement following a final tripartite vote on four options: US $ 198, US $ 206, US $ 210 and US $ 213.
The US $ 198 option garnered the majority of the vote at 46, followed by the US $ 213 option at five.
The country’s garment export accounted for US $ 8.02 billion, footwear made up US $ 1.39 billion and travel goods were to the tune of US $ 1.49 billion in 2021.
It is pertinent to mention here that Cambodia, one of the leading apparel exporting countries, had raised the minimum monthly wage for workers in September 2021 by US $ 2 to US $ 194 which came into effect from January 2022.
