Bangladesh is home to the highest number of green manufacturing units globally, but when it comes to getting better price points from the offerings that are produced from these units, there is, reportedly, a significant mismatch.
The country’s garment makers raised the point at a recent event once again.
Taking part in a discussion, Managing Director of Plummy Fashions Ltd., Fazlul Hoque, reportedly, said, “Global buyers and brands are taking credit for sourcing from environment-friendly factories, but they are not providing premium prices,” while adding even if the Government has extended a green fund, but the fund remains unused as new entrepreneurs cannot avail the same owing some riders associated with it.
Fazlul also highlighted there should be some incentives for the entrepreneurs for securing environment-friendly production as garment makers had to spend 30 per cent additional money to establish a green factory.
Meanwhile, the President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Faruque Hassan, reportedly, maintained that there was a sharp disconnection between sustainability and pricing mechanisms.
“…manufacturing cleaner and greener products cannot come at free of cost,” added the BGMEA President further.
