Faruque Hassan, the President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), defended the Government-set minimum wages for RMG workers, asserting that they are standard within the context of Bangladesh.
He emphasised the association’s commitment to providing regular and consistent salaries to RMG workers to support their livelihoods.
Faruque made these remarks in response to a letter from eight US Congress members to the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA), urging support for fairer wages and the protection of labour rights for Bangladeshi workers.
He also expressed the association’s willingness to implement a wage structure that allows for regular payment.
He disclosed that a new wage structure, featuring a 56-per cent hike, is being implemented for RMG workers, with a planned annual increment of five percent.
Additionally, Faruque highlighted that the Congress members not only advocated for increased wages but also recommended raising the prices of RMG items.
