The apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has called upon the workers employed in the apparel industry to stay at their respective workplaces during the upcoming Eid holidays while also maintain social distancing so as to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
We have requested factory owners to ensure 3-day leave, and ensure all workers stay in their workplaces to protect themselves from coronavirus, maintained the First Vice-President of BGMEA Syed Nazrul Islam while adding that to prevent a surge of COVID-19 infections, the Government has instructed everyone to stay in their work areas even as the BGMEA has requested its members to implement the Government directives.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, acting president of the IndustriALL Bangladesh Council (IBC), Salauddin Swapan, on his part underlined all organisations will have to follow the instructions issued by the Government while adding that the instructions are aimed at protecting the workers and if a large number of workers leave for their village during the Eid holidays, they will come into contact with other people and hence run risk of getting infected.
It may be mentioned here that as per reports, to prevent further spread of the dreaded virus while also ensure social distancing, the Government has instructed everyone to stay in their respective work areas while it had, reportedly, informed all organisations earlier not to give leave or holidays exceeding three days so as to deal with health risks and safety at work.
