The Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) is set to introduce an ‘Employment Injury Scheme’ aimed at supporting garment sector workers in Export Processing Zones (EPZs). This initiative is being developed in partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), as announced in a recent press release.
A ‘letter of intent’ was signed on Wednesday at the BEPZA executive office by Major General Abul Kalam Mohammad Ziaur Rahman, BEPZA’s executive chairman, Tuomo Poutiainen, ILO country director, and Anne Marie La Rosa, senior technical expert for the EIS Pilot Project.
This new scheme builds on a previously launched initiative, the ‘EIS-Pilot,’ which was introduced in the garment sector in June 2022. The signing of this letter marks a significant step towards extending the program’s benefits to workers in the EPZs, ensuring better support and protection for those in the industry.
