Despite Bangladesh Government’s initiative to provide various facilities at Savar, the uncalled-for delay by Hazaribagh tanners to shift their tanneries to Savar Leather Industrial Park has reportedly irked the country’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.
“We don’t know why they’re delaying (in relocating tanneries), this is not fair,” the Bangladesh Premier reportedly maintained while speaking at an event in Dhaka to mark the World Environment Day, adding, “We’ve also arranged waste treatment facilities there, but the tanners are making unnecessary delay.”

Hasina maintained that the quicker the tannery owners relocate their factories the faster the environment of Hazaribagh and adjacent areas will improve.
It may be mentioned here that High Court recently ordered tanners to pay BDT 50,000 per day as compensation for environmental pollution caused by them. But the Chamber Judge Court of the Appellate Division reportedly stayed the High Court order till July 17 after Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) filed an appeal seeking a stay on the High Court order.
