The Government on Tuesday officially established the minimum monthly wage for readymade garment (RMG) workers at Taka 12,500, despite facing protests from labourers who were demanding Taka 23,000 as the minimum monthly salary.
Reports maintained this adding State Minister for Labour, Monnujan Sufian, made the formal announcement of the RMG workers’ minimum wage during a press conference held at the Secretariat.
The Minimum Wages Board for the RMG sector had previously reached this decision during its 6th meeting held at the board’s office.
Trade unions reportedly rejected the newly declared minimum wage and insisted on a higher amount due to rising prices of essential commodities.
Concurrently, during the wage board meeting, various labour rights organizations reportedly staged a demonstration in front of the board’s office on Tuesday, demanding a monthly minimum pay of Taka 23,000 to Taka 25,000.
