Sustainability has always been an integral part of the apparel industry and it was distinctly evident on World Environment Day (5th June), when all the stakeholders from across the globe celebrated with exuberance their love and support for mother earth.

Among the several campaigns for the day, the most common one was the sapling plantation across the factory campus along with awareness through discussions and motivational programmes.

In India, employees of Pratibha Syntex, leading apparel exporter and one of the most sustainable apparel manufacturers, planted a large number of saplings. An in-house team video recorded interviews of many employees to compile a short film on environment conservation. This film will be used to generate awareness about environment protection. During the video interview, the employees shared their own methods for environment protection.

Besides, a painting competition was also organised on the theme of environment. To encourage employees to conserve water, a session on the water conservation was also conducted in the premises.

From across the globe, some of the companies who are leading on the sustainability front are becoming more aggressive in this direction. One such company is Brandix, one of the leading apparel manufacturers of Sri Lanka, whose employees pledged their support towards becoming Net Zero Carbon in operation by 2023.

The company announced that its Batticaloa factory has become the world’s first apparel manufacturing facility to get ‘Net Zero Carbon’ certification. This facility has completely neutralised its environmental impact through carbon dioxide emissions by being highly energy efficient and using on-site renewable energy resources.

On the buying side, Bestseller, Denmark, with a range of more than 20individual fashion brands, reiterates working towards powering its owned and operated buildings globally with 100 per cent renewable energy by 2021. As an initial step towards its ultimate ambition of becoming climate positive, Bestseller and its parent company Heartland have joined forces with energy company Better Energy to build its own solar power plant.
