Amazon has announced that all packaging for its deliveries in Europe is now recyclable. This includes items sold directly by Amazon and those from third-party partners using Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA).
The online retail giant has introduced various eco-friendly packaging options, allowing customers to receive parcels in flexible paper bags, cardboard envelopes, and corrugated cardboard boxes for easy recycling.
Amazon claims it uses scientific methods to determine the packaging type and size required for each shipment. Machine learning aids in identifying smaller products suitable for eco-friendly options such as paper bags, which are up to 90 per cent lighter than similar-sized boxes—reducing cardboard use by over 35 per cent in the last five years.
Moreover, Amazon says it has increased shipments without additional packaging by over 50 per cent in Europe over the past. These efforts have helped Amazon avoid using more than 1 billion single-use plastic delivery bags within its European distribution network since 2019.
“We’re excited that our European fulfilment network is now using recyclable packaging for customer orders,” said Pat Lindner, VP of Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging at Amazon.
“This is part of our long-term work to be a leader in sustainability, and we’ll continue to invest in innovative technology, machine learning, and more sustainable materials to ensure packaging—whether used by us or other companies—is good for our customers, communities, and the planet.”
