
Thirty-seven citizens are demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Bangladesh Garment Sramik Samhati General Secretary Babul Hossain and other detained labour leaders involved in this year’s RMG wage movement.
The signatories issued a statement recently expressing concern over the deaths of three individuals shot by the police and another person who was burned to death during the wage movement.
They called for an investigation into all killings, capital punishment for the guilty parties, justice for the victims, and life-term compensation.
Prominent figures among the signatories include writer and economist Anu Muhammad, human rights activist Hameeda Hossain, social activist Khushi Kabir, anthropologist Rehnuma Ahmed, lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, photographer Shahidul Alam, and women’s rights activist Farida Akhter.
Referring to a report from a new daily, the signatories highlighted that 53 cases have been filed against thousands of unnamed workers protesting for a wage increase.
Among the arrestees are Babul Hossain and local labour leaders Mizan, Jewel, and Raju.
