Even as workers’ agitation in various garment manufacturing hubs in the country continues, there are now apprehensions that the unrest could intensify further in the days to come.
As per Bangladesh’s Industrial Police, more than a thousand industrial units including over 600 readymade garment and textile factories may witness workers’ protest in demand of wages and bonus with the holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr round the corner.
As per the data prepared by the Industrial Police, eight RMG and textile units in Mymensingh, 41 garment factories under Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority, 96 in Chittagong, 307 in Gazipur, 144 in Ashulia and 57 in Narayanganj run risk of workers’ agitation.
Further, of these factories, 126 and 442 units are respectively affiliated to the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
Another 44 textile units are members of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA).
“We are trying to curb the risk through discussions with the factory owners and also taking measures to prevent any untoward incidents,” claimed Director General of Industrial Police Abdus Salam.
Meanwhile, as per reports, workers of various garment manufacturing units in several manufacturing hubs in and around capital Dhaka continue their protests.
Around 1,500 workers of Magpie Composite Textile Ltd. and Magpie Sweater Ltd. hit the streets in Ashulia demanding wages for April, while in Narayanganj workers of an apparel factory continued their protest for third consecutive day demanding wages.
Earlier, DBL Group, which is one of the prominent garment manufacturing companies of Bangladesh, also had to witness workers’ agitation with a section of them even resorting to vandalism.
