The Zimbabwe Clothing Manufacturers’ Association (ZCMA) intends to employ 35,000 people in textile sector. In its bid to achieve the target, ZCMA is striving to revive the old garment and textile units in the country.
Substantiating on the same, Jeremy Youmans, Chairman, ZCMA, said that the plan is to get jobs for 35,000 workers from the existing 6,700, in next 5 years.
He was addressing the Industry and Commerce Deputy Minister Raj Modi, and other government officials, who were visiting Archer Clothing Manufacturers in Bulawayo.
It is important to note here that Youmans is also the Managing Director of Archer Clothing Manufacturers apart from being the ZCMA Chairman.
He added that there are still lot of resources available in Zimbabwe and the country’s textile sector can create lot of jobs through value addition.
The garment and textile industry of Zimbabwe had declined mainly owing to influx of imported products and outdated machines. Besides, the industry never got any funding for retooling.
The ZCMA Chairman urged the government to implement ‘local content policy’ to enhance the growth of local industries.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Modi assured Youmans that the government will not only help the textile and garment industries in the country regain their old glory, but also will execute policies to encourage industrialisation.
