Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Deendayal Hastkala Sankul, a trade facilitation centre for handicrafts, in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) on September 22.
The PM described trade facilitation centre, foundation stone for which was laid by him on November 7, 2014, as one of the biggest projects for Varanasi for a long time.
The setting up of a Trade Facilitation Centre and a Crafts Museum to develop and promote handlooms, handicrafts and silk products of Varanasi was first announced in the Budget 2014-15.
The Centre would serve as a platform for those artisans and weavers who wish to make their skills popular globally and help increase their earnings.
According to the PM, the establishment of this centre would positively affect the demand of handicrafts, and also positively impact the tourism industry of Varanasi, and definitely the economy of the city.
Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani was also present at the inauguration ceremony of the Rs. 300 crore-Deendayal Hastkala Sankul.
Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik; Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath; and Minister of State, Textiles, Ajay Tamta were among other dignitaries who graced the occasion.
