Ethiopia has missed its textile export targets. This was announced by Ethiopian Ministry of Trade & Industry (MTI) and the Industrial Parks Corporation (IPC) while presenting a report to the Ethiopian House of Peoples’ Representatives.
According to the MTI, the export performance of the country was US $ 135 million less than the previous year. The export performance for the last 6 months was just US $ 1.2 billion, which was much short of the set target (US $ 1.9 billion)
IPC too presented a 2015–2018 performance audit report. As per the evaluation in 2015–2016, the export of items originating at the Bole Lemi Industrial Park was around US $ 16.9 million.
The numbers are alarming considering that the initial plan was to export products worth US $ 130 million from the park for the said period.
Similarly for 2016–2017, the expected export target was US $ 40 million while the achieved numbers were only US $ 23.8 million. For the same period, the planned export target from the Hawassa Industrial Park (another major textile hub) was US $ 50 million, but the park produced mere US $ 1.4 million.
