The issue of foreigners working in the country, the number of which is said to be substantial in the country’s garment manufacturing sector and many of whom are alleged to be working illegally, has drawn the court’s attention after the High Court Division recently directed the Government to submit in 60 days a report about foreigners working in Bangladesh with and without work permits and how much tax they pay annually.
A bench of Justice M. Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md. Mostafizur Rahman also directed the Government to inform it in the same report about the number of foreigners working or doing businesses in Bangladesh, claimed media reports.
The court passed the order after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Monjur Nahid.
As per the petitioner, local experts were not getting the right positions in textile and garment sectors since foreign nationals were recruited to the highest posts flouting the guideline issued in 2011, which mandates that the foreign employees would not exceed 5 per cent in the industrial sector and 20 per cent in the commercial sector including the managerial posts in any enterprise.
