The textile designer of The Fabrick Lab, Elaine Ng Yan Ling, has recently carried out a project based on the incredible hybrid of nature, innovation, and luxury. The project titled Climatology mimics not only the physical aspects of nature, but the behavioural as well. Taking inspiration from the concept of “Biomimicry”, Ling has created a textile that adapts itself according to various seasons and climate. Using wood veneer, fabric, reflective material, and reactive dyes, this piece has been developed to physically adapt to changes in light, temperature and humidity.
The project includes two collections, “Macro Wooden Velcro” and “Wooden Skin”. The macro wooden Velcro collection is a reflection of microstructures magnified and translated into innovative design features that characterize the object. The latter collection is inspired by the behaviour of the plant Selaginelia Lepidoplylla, which can live with long periods of dehydration going on for months or years.
