A total of 11 unauthorized textile processing units in Erode town and its suburbs were demolished recently by a team of officials from Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), the officials also got hold of a landowner in Kongampalayam, who was repeatedly renting out his land for the establishment of unauthorized textile processing units. The units functioning in Rasampalayam, SSP Nagar, and Kongampalayam were found dumping huge amount of untreated, toxic effluents in the water sources. Out of 11, three units found were operating on generators round the clock.
The environment activists demanded for a strict criminal action, against landowners providing their lands for the establishment of these unauthorized textile process units. The TNPCB has already demolished more than 100 unauthorized textile processing units since November last year.
