American retail giant Walmart Stores Inc. has opened its first fulfilment centre (FC) in India. The retail giant has set up its FC in Bhiwandi near Mumbai. The establishment of the warehousing facility is seen as a move to speed up its operations in the country.
The move has also come as a counter step against its global arch-rival Amazon which is working extensively to increase its presence in India. Amazon has opened various fulfilment centres across the country recently to enrich its infrastructural impression.
Even Flipkart has partnered with 3,000-plus Kirana stores in 28 cities over the years. These agents deliver 30 packages/day. Amazon also has tie-ups with 17,500 shopkeepers in 225 cities under ‘IHS (I Have Space) Programme’. The mediators deliver 40 orders/day from these points.
After launching its first FC in India, Walmart is now planning to add 5-7 more by next year and another 8-10 in the subsequent year.
Global e-commerce players are focusing on increasing their presence in India in view of the booming e-retail in the country.
