The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated construction of the 10-storey Bangabazar Nagar Wholesale Market in the capital.
The Bangabazar Shopping Complex in Dhaka saw a terrible fire on 4th April 2023, that destroyed over 2,931 stores and severely damaged the lives of thousands of traders only weeks before Eid. This event led to the creation of the new market.
The 106.28 katha proposed 10-story structure will include four blocks, five main stairways, six emergency stairways, and 3,213 stores that are between 80 and 110 square feet each.
Each floor will also include a 250 sq.ft. food court and separate toilet blocks.
Eight elevators will be available at the market: four for passengers and four for cargo. To allow easy access, the roadways surrounding the market will be 7–10 feet wide. The facility will also have underground parking for 169 automobiles and 109 motorcycles, as well as a sophisticated firefighting system.
The store owners impacted by the fire in Bangabazar, Gulistan, Mahanagar, and Adarsha Hawkers Market will receive 2,961 shops in total. An application process will be used to access an additional 244 shops.
According to Dhaka South City Corporation, the market’s construction will be finished by December 2026.
