Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is targeting to boost its sale and popularise khadi products with the help of Indian Railways. Both have joined hands for ‘Khadi Express’, the train that will enhance the awareness about the segment across the country.
KVIC has written a letter to the Indian Railways for the same citing that the ‘Khadi Express’ would showcase the rich history of khadi products and its connection with Mahatma Gandhi.
Notably, a five-bogie train will cover all those cities where Mahatma Gandhi had stayed and it will be packed with all the facilities to sell the khadi merchandises to the interested shoppers. The train will be stationed at every location for one day.
It is important to add here that khadi has witnessed a 25 per cent surge in its earnings to Rs. 2,503 crores in FY 2017-18 which was at Rs. 811 crores back in FY 2014-15.
Furthermore, KVIC has been expanding its khadi outlets throughout the country and has launched around over 320 new Khadi institutions in the last couple of years. It is looking at touching a revenue target of Rs. 5,000 crores by the end of the ongoing fiscal year.
“The demand of khadi products blossomed soon after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself urged the people of the country to purchase these products,” Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chairman, KVIC said.
