The textile industry in India has consistently called for a reformation of the Quality Control Orders (QCO) for the imports of Polyester Staple Fibres (PSF) which have affected domestic manufacturers due to price differences between domestic and imported fibres. Such a demand was also raised in Parliament on 9th August 2024.
Karti P Chidambaram, Member of Parliament from the Sivaganga Constituency has raised the issue of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) on Polyester Staple Fibres in the Lok Sabha.
He said that the policy regarding PSF which is a necessary raw material in the textile industry in India. He claimed that the international price of PSF is Rs. 80 per unit whereas the domestic price is Rs. 110 per unit. He said that the QCO introduced by the Government is a non-tariff barrier prohibiting imports into the country.
This is leading to textile units being unviable since there are very few manufacturers in India making PSF but there are several more textile units that require PSF as a raw material. He claimed that a few A-list companies are being given a boost due to this QCO for their benefit. He urged that the QCO be withdrawn so that Indian textile units are able to import PSF at better prices. He also claimed that the QCO lacks transparency further exacerbating the issue by failing to provide clear and consistent guidelines.
He also sent a letter to the Union Minister for Textiles, Giriraj Singh for the same.
