The High Court has questioned the Bangladesh Government on its alleged failure to take timely action against companies that embezzled people’s money, which comes close on heels of a string of reports of alleged anomalies by many e-commerce firms in the country including Evaly, the top honchos of which were arrested by the police recently related to a case of embezzlement.
According to media reports, the virtual bench of Justice Md. Zakir Hossain and Justice Abu Taher Md. Saifur Rahman came up with this observation while hearing a writ petition — Supreme Court lawyer Md. Anwarul Islam Badhon, reportedly, filed a writ petition with the HC seeking its directive for forming an e-commerce regulatory authority for oversight on the fast-growing industry — even as the court, reportedly, highlighted the plight of the customers.
It may be mentioned here that the latest development comes close on heels of thousands of customers being allegedly left in limbo as some e-commerce firms failed to deliver goods for which they had made payment months ago even if reports suggest that e-commerce entities Dhamaka Shopping and Evaly have liabilities to customers upwards of Taka 1,000 crore even as they owe hundreds of crores to merchants, who had supplied goods on credit.
