British fashion retailer Frasers Group has been ordered by the High Court to pay rent arrears that have been built up ever since the pandemic hit the country early last year.
The High Court ruled against the Mike Ashley-owned fashion retailer in its tussle with landlords over arrears.
The landlords were awarded summary judgement in the court for an undisclosed amount of rent related to a Sports Direct store in Blackpool.
Frasers Group, which owns Sports Direct, hasn’t officially commented on the same.
While awarding the summary judgement to landlords, Master John Dagnall said “The voluntary code of practice for commercial property relationships during the pandemic was no obstacle to bringing a claim for unpaid rent.”
He, reportedly, added that the voluntary code encouraging negotiation should in no way obstruct a claimant contending they have clear cases seeking summary judgement.
Started in 1982, Frasers Group is the UK’s largest sports-goods retailer with around 670 stores across the globe. In 2020, it generated £3,957.4 million.
