
Even as Bangladesh has extended by another week the ongoing lockdown amidst surging coronavirus cases in the country, it has now emerged that a spurt in home deliveries during the pandemic has created around 1 lakh jobs.
According to media reports, e-commerce entities and food delivery platforms and their partner logistic aggregators have hired thousands of delivery personnel during the coronavirus pandemic in Bangladesh as it led to a significant increase in online orders as people preferred to buy products and services from the comfort of their homes without being exposed to COVID-19.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, e-commerce sector has employed more than 1 lakh people, underlined State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak speaking to the media even as Chief Marketing Officer of Evaly — Evaly is a famous e-commerce platform in Bangladesh — Arif R. Hossain on his part maintained that e-commerce is keeping Bangladesh’s economy afloat in these difficult times and is employing many people while as per the industry insiders, many people are flocking to the delivery segment to work as delivery staff or fulfil other positions, thereby providing some respite to those who lost jobs during the pandemic, the numbers of whom are said to be in millions.
