Loft, the American apparel retailer, has been receiving flak from social media following its announcement on Monday (15 March) to drop plus sizes.
The New York-based retailer saw its US women customers expressing their displeasure on Facebook and Twitter over the decision.
Private equity firm Sycamore Partners, which had bought Loft in 2020, declined to comment on the same.
It may be recalled that Sycamore Partners had bought the retailer, along with Ann Taylor, Lou & Grey as well as Lane Bryant for US $ 540 million during a Chapter 11 auction process last year.
In response to its displeased women customers, Loft, reportedly, stated business challenges as the reason for dropping the plus sizes.
By business challenges, the retailer, in all likelihood, referred to the complexity in producing such plus-sized apparels.
The retailer, as per media reports, said that starting this fall, it would be offering sizes 00-18/XXS-XXL.
Loft also added that while the age group between 46 and 64 is a ‘key demographic’ for plus size women’s apparels, those aged from 20 to 64 (in the US) is expected to rise in 2021, thereby creating huge opportunities for the industry.
Loft was set up in 1996 as an extension of the original Ann Taylor brand.
