The leading e-retailer Amazon Inc. is expanding its footprint in Canada with a fulfilment centre in Ottawa which is expected to open jobs opportunities for around 600 employees. These employees will pick, pack and deliver large products like; household decor, sporting equipment etc. from the new warehouse in the eastern suburb of Orleans.
With this opening, the e-retailer will take its tally of warehouses to eight in Canada, while its technology centre in Vancouver is currently undergoing an expansion. The US-based e-retailer is expected to reveal the location of its second headquarters in the country in the coming time. This development has come amid the company’s search for its second North American headquarters, named as HQ2.
In a press statement issued, Glenn Sommerville, Director, Amazon operations in Canada said that Ontario has continuously been a great region for Amazon for business purposes and the company is eyeing to add a fulfilment centre in the National Capital Region.
“Incredible customer base and a prominent workforce have propelled us to expand in Ontario and create over 600 new employment opportunities. Amazon is committed to offer unbiased job opportunities and provide an economic boost in the region,” Sommerville added.
Additionally, the 92,900-square-metre warehouse will also create over 1,500 construction jobs in the region. Amazon currently employs more than 6,000 workers across the country and 2,000 full-time subordinates at its existing Ontario facilities in Brampton, Mississauga and Milton.
The Ottawa announcement was welcomed by some of the politicians from all levels of government, who applauded the possible economic growth it can provide to the region and in the country.
