The Government would act to take advantage of the unrest in Bangladesh, according to Karnataka Textiles Minister Shivanand Patil, and this could prove to be advantageous for India’s garment industry.
Speaking at a National Handloom Day ceremony, Patil predicted that events in Bangladesh will undoubtedly hurt the country’s apparel industry. He went on to say that Karnataka needed to take advantage of this fantastic chance. Emphasising the challenges encountered by weavers in the region, Patil stated that a decline in earnings within the handloom industry has resulted in numerous weavers abandoning their vocation.
“The community is shunning the profession completely, despite the state and central governments coming out with welfare schemes for them. The governments are helping weavers to set up their own small textile units to replace handlooms, besides heavily subsidising electricity, giving loans at low interest rates and scholarships for their children’s education,” he said.
