An acute gas crisis is adversely affecting approximately 450 factories in Narayanganj, with similar challenges faced by industrial areas in Savar and Gazipur’s Sreepur in Bangladesh even as dyeing factories, spinning mills, and various industries are experiencing production disruptions due to the severe gas shortage.
Industries in Habiganj, Narsingdi, Mymensingh’s Bhaluka, and Chittagong are also receiving less gas than demanded.
This is as per media reports, which, citing the industry players underlined, although production ran relatively smoothly in the past three months with gas pressure for 6-7 hours at night and on weekends, the crisis intensified in January even as some have resorted to alternative systems at extra cost to maintain production.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Ali, President of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), emphasised an extreme gas crisis in the last two weeks, particularly affecting Narayanganj’s Fatullah, Rupganj, and Araihajar, as well as Gazipur’s Sreepur and Savar where dyeing factories have been severely impacted.
Expressing frustration, Ali mentioned the lack of communication from Petrobangla or Titas officials about the gas crisis, stating, “No one at the top-level talks about the gas crisis, and none can be reached over the phone now. We are tired of it.”
