In a move that is expected to help reduce the issue of solid waste and pollution plaguing the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate (STIE) in Bangladesh — currently polluting materials are allegedly dumped in open yards — Bangladesh-based Anjuman Trading Corporation Ltd., will, reportedly, export solid waste from the STIE.
Media reports claimed this while adding as per the Managing Director of Anjuman Trading Corporation Ltd., Shaheen Ahamed, the company has received permission from the Commerce Ministry to export 200 tonnes of solid waste and would ship 20 tonnes by the end of this month or early next month even as if all goes as per plan, it would be the first solid tannery waste shipment from the country (Bangladesh).
Reports further added around 64,000 tonnes of solid tannery waste is generated annually at the STIE while underlining the members of the Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) have been in talks with some companies in Vietnam and Indonesia to export tannery waste and several local firms have, reportedly, shown interest in shipping solid waste.
