Biotech company Kraig Biocraft has launched its first premium yarn combining its recombinant spider silk with Pima Cotton.
The yarn from Kraig Biocraft intends to capture more value-added vertical integration in the textile and garment markets. It is designed to blend the finest grade cotton with spider silk to generate a 100 per cent natural fibre composite yarn for usage in textiles and finished garments.
In collaboration with its textile consultant, Jeff Dorton, the business looked into a number of possible spinners before deciding on one. The spinner’s technological prowess and production capability ultimately determined the choice.
“This is just the first of many new materials we have planned that incorporate our revolutionary spider silk,” said CEO and founder Kim Thompson.
In order to reach consumers in industries like upscale dresswear and apparel, the business created its first blend of cotton and spider silk. In order to service other formal wear subsegments, Kraig Biocraft is attempting to produce additional blends of natural fibre and spider silk.
With the goal of improving sericulture practices in Vietnam, the new facility will not only support Kraig Biocraft’s production capacities but also operate as a hub for collaboration with the Vietnam Sericulture Association (VSA) and the Lam Dong Agro-Forestry Research and Experiment Centre (LAREC).
